Auburndale Man Held in Jail on Charges of Attempted Murder of Two Bail Bondsmen

AUBURNDALE | A judge denied bail Tuesday for a 30-year-old Auburndale man accused of trying to shoot at two bail bondsmen earlier this month.

One of the bondsmen fired back at Terry Waters, but missed and was cleared by Auburndale police, who found he acted in self-defense, according to an arrest report.

Waters, of 20 Alabama Lane, was arrested Saturday on two warrants for failure to appear in court, according to a Polk County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.

Once Waters was booked in jail, Auburndale police also charged him with two counts of attempted murder and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, stemming from the April 18 incident involving Eddie White Jr. and Edrick M. White, who own Nation Bonds Inc. in Bartow, according an arrest report.

The two men began looking for Waters after a judge issued a warrant for his arrest when he failed to appear at an April 15 court hearing, the report states.

The hearing was scheduled after Waters was arrested in January on charges of aggravated assault and obstruction of justice, court records said.

Under Florida law, a licensed bail bondsman can apprehend and turn over a person to law enforcement if the person fails to appear in court, risking forfeiture of the bond.

During the evening of April 18, the men learned Waters was staying at the Best Western in Auburndale and went to the hotel. They saw Waters and called Auburndale police to assist in the apprehension.

The bondsmen took an elevator to the second floor of the hotel, where they planned to wait for police, the report states. However, the men ran into Waters in the hallway, the report states.

Eddie White Jr. started struggling with Waters and fell to the ground. Edrick White joined in and attempted to handcuff Waters, but Waters continued to resist, the report states.

During the struggle, Waters pulled a revolver from his pants and pointed it at the two men, the report states.

Waters then started backing away and attempted to shoot the weapon, but the revolver never fired, the report states.

Edrick White fired one shot toward Waters, the report states. The bullet missed Waters and hit a wall in the hotel hallway.

Auburndale police said White was in fear for his life and acted in self-defense when firing at Waters.

Waters ran after the struggle, Auburndale police Lt. Thrasey Tucker said. He was found by Polk sheriff’s deputies Saturday.
